Features

  • Virtually the same depth of field, focus and angle of view as with a 35mm film camera.
  • Optimized for 35mm film lenses -- motion and still.
  • The Mini35 relay has its own iris to control of the amount of light through the system without affecting depth of field, giving new creative freedom not available on a standard camera setup.
  • The 400 Series Mini35 incorporates the following features: ground glass oscillates instead of spinning; quieter operation; simultaneous start/stop of camera and Mini35 unit; easier to maintain.
  • Interchangeable mounts available for shooting with Arri PL, Nikon, Panavision, Leica, Zeiss-Contax or Canon EF 35mm lenses.
  • Industry standard 15mm lightweight support rods accommodate popular matte boxes, follow focus units and other professional motion picture accessories.
  • Easily converted between the Sony, Canon and Panasonic camcorders using the appropriate Camera Adapter with the same 400 Series Mini35 Basic Unit.
  • The Canon XL1/Xl1S Camera Adapter is compatible with all versions of the Mini35 Base Unit, as is the Sony Camera Adapter, now upgraded with improved optics.
  • To ensure that you achieve the very best image quality, the Panasonic Camera Adapter is compatible only with the 400 Series Mini35 Base Unit.

Uses
  • Film Crews: Shoot pre-production trial footage and get a true 35mm image without using an expensive film camera.
  • Filmmakers: Produce your creative vision on a modest budget using MiniDV and 35mm film lenses instead of expensive film stock for a finished product with virtually the same look and feel.
  • Email film-like quality trial footage from the field.
  • Film Schools: Great for film schools teaching 35mm framing, lighting and depth of field control.
  • Film Students: Rent the P+S Mini Digital adapter and 35mm film lenses from your local film equipment rental facility and get practical film production experience without using expensive film stock.
  • Practice focus-pulling, shoot and get creative with depth of field -- all on inexpensive Mini DV tape.
  • Professional Videographers: Reproduce the three-dimensional quality of 35mm film on video and produce better images for TV spots, shorts, presentations, Internet applications feature films. Reports from camera operators worldwide: "The client was blown away. They couldn't believe it wasn't shot on film!"
How It Works

The adapter creates a 35mm image on the ground glass located in the film plane of the 35mm lens you attach to it. By creating a physical image inside the adapter, the natural control over the depth of field, present in 35mm film format, is preserved on your Mini DV tape. This true 35mm format image is then relayed onto the camcorder’s CCDs.

The adapter relay has its own iris to control the amount of light through the system without affecting depth of field. Defining the depth of field is usually achieved by setting the aperture of the film lens. Adjust the iris on the adapter to control independently the amount of light through the system. This feature of the Mini 35 Digital adapter gives you a new creative freedom not available on a standard camera setup.

In addition, the angle of view of the lens is preserved. For example, a 25mm film lens remains wide angle when it is used on this system.

Tip from the ZGC Tech Desk: Most people find that the image through the adapter softens the harsh video detail so the use of a low contrast filter is not needed. Click here for more How-to’s and Tips from the ZGC Tech Desk about the Mini 35 Digital Adapter.
